Saint John Eudes

Author of the Liturgical Worship of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Holy Heart of Mary

Saint John Eudes was a priest and missionary born in 1601 in Normandy, France.  He had a special devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Holy Heart of Mary, which inspired him to author the Mass and Divine Office propers for the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.  He likewise wrote teachings and composed  prayers for this devotion.

Early on in his priesthood, Saint John Eudes was also active as a missionary doing volunteer work especially in caring for the sick victims of the plagues which broke out in Normandy in 1625 and 1631.  Eventually, he founded the Order of Our Lady of Charity to give refuge and help to prostitutes who wished to do penance and reform their lives.  Around the same time, he established the Congregation of Jesus and Mary, which primarily focused on educating priests and doing missions.
