Saint Joseph Calasanz was born in Spain in the 16th Century. He is the founder of the Order of Religious Schools called Scolopi or Piarists. It was the first public school system in Europe wherein every child was accepted regardless of his race or social status. Saint Joseph’s heart was moved with compassion after discovering there were many neglected and orphaned children in Rome. Today he is recognized as the Patron of Catholic schools.
